Plea from Bristol City Council about College Green following Greta Thunberg march

People have been asked to stay off the grass at College Green for the time being while it recovers after the Greta Thunberg rally on Friday (February 28).

The grass area outside City Hall turned into a mud bath when thousands of people gathered in the wet weather to watch the world-renowned 17-year-old climate activist speak.

Pictures of College Green following the rally on Friday showed the site completely covered in muddy footprints and barely and greenery in sight.

But pictures of the site taken earlier today (March 3) show that the land has already started to recover with plenty of green shoots of grass already coming through.

More than 20,000 people attended the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate event on College Green, before marching around the city centre.

The cost to repair any damage to the land will fall to Bristol City Council and the taxpayer.

But it looks like the council could have some help in covering the costs after a fundraiser to help pay for any damage caused raised more than £14,000 in just a matter of days.

Bristol City Council carried out a visual assessment of the site on Monday (March 2) but said the land needs more time to dry out before a final assessment and a plan of action can be determined.

Asher Craig, deputy mayor and cabinet member for communities, equality and public health, said: “We’re grateful to everyone who has contributed to the fundraiser to support the recovery of College Green.

“It’s heart-warming to see how much people care about this much loved green space.

“We have visited the site but before any decisions are made the area will need to dry out so another assessment can be carried out.

“Bristol Waste will also be visiting to remove some compacted rubbish from the site.

“It’s great to see that the grass is already beginning to recover, and will continue to do so as the weather gets warmer and drier.

“I’d ask that people stay off College Green for the time being so it can properly dry out and recover as quickly as possible.”
