PlayStation Plus reveals monthly games for September

A new month means a trio of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers, including a zany open-world actioner that could turn out to be the final installment in a long-running series.

We’re talking about the Saints Row reboot, which is joined by the fantasy multiplayer game Black Desert, and man versus machine shooter Generation Zero.

All three games are available to all PS Plus members starting Tuesday, September 5, irrespective of your subscription plan. They’ll replace last month’s titles: Dreams, Death’s Door, and PGA Tour 2K23.

The new games arrive as Sony is preparing to ramp up prices for annual PlayStation Plus plans. If you want to avoid the surcharge, make sure to sign up for a yearly subscription before September 6.

Here’s what’s in store for PlayStation Plus members in September.

If you were put off by the bad reviews upon launch, now could be the ideal time to give Saints Row another look. The series is essentially a more madcap version of Grand Theft Auto, with outlandish characters, crazy weapons, and ultra-violent missions. In the latest entry, you’re tasked with taking over a city from warning gangs as you build out your own criminal empire.

The game is set to arrive on PS Plus as its developer, Volition, shuts down for good after 30 years in the industry. The move has cast a massive shadow over the future of the Saints Row franchise. It’s a shame as the reboot may have benefited from the low stakes that come with playing on PS Plus versus forking out for a full-price game.

Elsewhere, fantasy fans can dive into the massive multiplayer online game Black Desert - Traveler Edition. Despite arriving in Asia in 2014, the title still boasts over 600,000 daily players who are clearly enjoying living a virtual life. That’s right, you can ditch the game’s quests and follow your inner entrepreneur by becoming a fisher, farmer, or horse breeder. And if it’s action you crave, you can wage large-scale battles against other players and enemies.

Finally, the last entry on this month’s list is Generation Zero: a shooter set in the eighties that pits humans against mechanoid robots.
