PlayStation Plus monthly games for August announced

Sony has announced the monthly games coming to PlayStation Plus in August, and they include a brilliant game-making toolkit for all the creative types out there.

August’s PlayStation Plus Essential games include Dreams, Death’s Door, and PGA Tour 2K23.

These titles will be available from August 1 until September 4, and boot out the titles we wrote about last month. They are Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered, and Endling Extinction is Forever. PlayStation Plus subscriber? Make sure to claim them before they are gone.

Let’s take a closer look at the titles coming to PlayStation Plus in August.

PlayStation Plus August games

Dreams is the most interesting of the bunch, even if it won’t be for everyone. This is game-creation software, produced by UK developer Media Molecule, based in Guildford.

It’s an exceptional set of tools for creative folks who like the idea of making their own game but don’t have any real programming skills. And if, like us, you don’t have the time or energy to spend fistfuls of hours fine-tuning your creation, you can simply use Dreams to browse through and experience what other people have made.

Media Molecule is ending “live support” for Dreams from September, meaning official community events and updates are coming to an end soon. But its inclusion as part of PlayStation Plus’s monthly games should give the Dreams community a shot in the arm.

The developer itself will release a new game made with Dreams on August 1 too, called Tren.

Next up, Death’s Door is this month’s critical darling, an indie hit that won Golden Joysticks Indie Game of the Year award in 2021. It’s an isometric top-down, puzzle-infused action adventure.

You are a reaper, a crow who has to collect the souls of people who are yet to move onto the afterlife. It looks cute, but Death’s Door is packed with combat encounters that rely on strategy. This led some to compare it to rock-hard sensation Dark Souls, although it is less tricky than that title.

Finally, PGA Tour 2K23 is a golf game. It aims for realism, and lets you play as golfing hero Tiger Woods. However, if you have no interest in the sport, this title is unlikely to draw you in.

PlayStation Plus tiers explained

All three games can be played on PS4 or PS5. They can also be downloaded with any of the three tiers of PlayStation Plus membership: Essential, Extra, or Premium.

If you’re considering re-subscribing, PlayStation Plus Essential costs £6.99 a month or £49.99 a year. Extra adds access to the Games Catalogue, a library of hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games, and costs £10.99 a month, £83.99 a year.

The top-most tier is PlayStation Plus Premium, and includes access to a library of retro games and game trials. It costs £99.99 a year or £13.49 a month.
