PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue additions for January announced

Sony PlayStation has confirmed the titles coming to the PlayStation Plus games Catalogue this month, and they include the highly regarded remake of Resident Evil 2.

Fourteen games are heading to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue, and all will be available from January 16.

We’ll take a look at some of the top picks in a moment, but here’s the full list:

  • Just Cause 3 (73/100 on Metacritic)
  • LEGO City Undercover (77/100 on Metacritic)
  • Hardspace: Shipbreaker (PS5 only, 79/100 on Metacritic)
  • Resident Evil 2 (91/100 on Metacritic)
  • Session: Skate Sim (67/100 on Metacritic)
  • Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (85/100 on Metacritic)
  • Surviving the Aftermath (70/100 on Metacritic)
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands – Next-Level Edition (76/100 on Metacritic)
  • Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong (64/100 on Metacritic)

PlayStation Classics

  • Rally Cross
  • Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace
  • Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Collection
  • Legend of Mana
  • Secret of Mana

As ever, the PS4 and PS5 games will be available to subscribers of PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra. Retro Classic selections are only available to Premium subscribers.

If you have PlayStation Plus Essential, you only get access to the Monthly Games selection, which this month includes Plague Tale: Requiem and Evil West.

You can watch a preview of the Game Catalogue January titles on the PlayStation Access YouTube channel, which is run by PlayStation UK.

Resident Evil 2 is the highest-rated game of the lot, with a 91 per cent score on Metacritic. It’s a lush “behind-the-shoulder” 3D remake of a 1998 PS1 survival horror game. Even the remake is getting on a bit, having been released in 2019. But it still looks fantastic and is very gory. It’s not one for the kids and comes with a PEGI 18 rating.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is the second most highly rated title for January, and is an isometric stealth-strategy title set in Edo-era Japan. This one was released back in 2016 and, despite making many of the best games in the genre, developer Mimimi games announced it was shutting up shop late last year. This one is well worth a look.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker is the only title made just for PlayStation 5, not PS4, making it this month’s closest thing to a graphical showcase. You are the shipbreaker of the title, someone who has to break down space ships by dissecting them with laser cutters. You glide through space in your suit, and it’s all a pretty zen experience. Whether you find it relaxing or too much like work will depend on your temperament.
