Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced Tuesday that its PlayStation home video game console series has been recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as the best-selling console brand in history.

From the release of the first model in 1994 to the PlayStation 4, console sales have reached about 450 million units. SIE plans to release PlayStation 5 sometime during the 2020 end-of-the-year shopping season.

PlayStation 2, released in 2000, has already been recognized as the best-selling individual video game console, according to the company.

Former honorary chairman of then Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (now SIE) Ken Kutaragi, who created the PlayStation series, said Tuesday at a recognition ceremony in Tokyo, "Twenty-five years ago, we set a goal to sell '1 million consoles,' and I remember that uplifting feeling back then. I look forward to seeing what happens next."
