PlayStation Classic: Sony re-launches beloved console along with 20 'genre-defining' games

The original PlayStation is coming back.

Sony is re-making the beloved console and bundling it up with a whole host of "genre-defining" games, including Final Fantasy VII, Tekken, Ridge Racer Type 4.

The PlayStation Classic will look almost identical to the original console, which came out nearly 25 years ago, and come with the same controllers and packaging.

But it will actually be wholly re-designed: it will be 45 per cent smaller, and come with 20 titles built in. It will also be re-engineered so that it can be plugged into modern TVs using a HDMI cable.

It will also come with two exact recreations of the original controllers, so that people can play multiplayer.

The new console will be out 3 December and cost $99, €99.99, £89.99 or 9,980 yen.

It isn't clear exactly which games will be coming to the console. Sony mentioned a few games – Jumping Flash and Wild Arms in addition to those above – but made clear that 20 titles will be arriving in total.

Sony showed how the new console had shrunk in pictures that compared the 1994 and 2018 versions.

Sony's decision to release the PlayStation Classic comes soon after Nintendo did the same with its NES and SNES re-issues. Those also bundled the games inside the console, and proved incredibly popular despite the fact many of the games can now be played on modern systems like mobile phones or the Nintendo Switch.
