They’re both expected to launch in Holiday 2020, but a new report claims that the PlayStation 5 will ‘overpower’ Xbox ’s Project Scarlett.
Writing on the ResetEra forum , a user by the name Kleegamefan, claims to have used the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett devkits, and indicates that the PS5 is much better.
The user wrote: “Right now, game performance is better on PS5. I believe that is probably because PS5 development hardware and software are in a more advanced state.
“I fully expect Scarlett to close that gap once they ship more mature dev kits and software.
“It must be said, since software, not hardware, is a traditional Microsoft area of expertise, it’s very possible that they could ultimately deliver more advanced DirectX development software in the end allowing games to run better on Scarlett even if the hardware is less capable.”
Both Sony and Microsoft have confirmed launch dates of ‘Holiday 2020’ for their highly-anticipated consoles, indicating they’re likely to come out between October and December next year.
Microsoft claims that Project Scarlett will ‘set a new bar for console power, speed and performance.’
It explained: “With a custom-designed AMD processor, high bandwidth GDDR6 memory and a next generation solid state drive (SSD), Project Scarlett will give developers the power they need to bring their creative visions to life.
“Thousands of games across four console generations will look and play best on Project Scarlett.”
However, the console will face stiff competition from the PlayStation 5, which is ‘progressing according to plan.’
Speaking during Sony’s quarterly financial conference call, Hiroki Totoki, CFO at Sony, said: “Development of the PS5 is progressing according to plan and we believe development of game titles by our software development partners is progressing smoothly.”
While Mr Totoki didn’t mention any specific games, he added that they’ll be ‘highly-engaging.’
He said: “We anticipate providing highly-engaging gameplay experiences that both current users of PS4 and potential new users have come to expect.”
