PlayStation 5 price still hasn't been decided by Sony, executive claims

It’s tipped to launch in a matter of days, but it seems that Sony still hasn’t decided on a price for the PlayStation 5 console.

Speaking during an earnings call this week, Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s CFO, appeared to suggest the console’s starting price will reflect the cost of other competitors.

He said: “What is not very clear or visible is because we are competing in the space, so it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point of time.

"Depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay.”

Rumours suggest that the console could launch with a starting price of £449 - slightly more expensive than PlayStation 4, which launched with a price point of £399 back in 2014.

Meanwhile, the most recent rumours shared on Reddit indicate that Sony could launch the console at an event on February 29.

Reddit user PennyOhms spotted that Sony Hall is booked for a ‘private event’ that evening.

They wrote: “Rumoured Venue for PS5 Sony Event closed for "Private Event" on Saturday Feb 29th. Could this be it?”

While previous rumours suggested an earlier launch date of February 5, fans have noticed that Sony does not have any events at Sony Hall that night.

PennyOhms added: “Much later than the Rumoured Feb 5th, but nothing is showing on that day.”
