PlayStation 5 goes up for pre-order - but it has an eye-watering price tag

It’s been over three years since Sony launched its last PlayStation console, and unsurprisngly, fans are eager to see what’s in store next.

Sony has remained tight-lipped on a release date for its next console, which is widely referred to as the PlayStation 5, although rumours suggest that it will be launched in mid to late 2020.

While that’s still a while away, one Swedish website has already started accepting pre-orders for the console.

MediaMarkt Sweden has listed the Playstation 5 on its website, with an eye-watering price tag of 9999 Swedish Krona (£858.45).

The listing reads: “PlayStation 5 is rumoured to have third-generation AMD Ryzen processor and SSD storage. It is said to be backwards compatible with PS4 games. Pre-book today and secure PlayStation 5 upon release.”

If MediaMarkt Sweden’s price point is correct, it’s significantly higher than predictions, which indicated that the PlayStation 5 would retail at £410 ($499).

It’s also significantly more expensive than the PlayStation 4, which was priced at $399 (£327) when it launched back in 2014.

Thankfully, it seems that MediaMarkt Sweden’s pricing isn’t set in stone.

Could this be what the PS5 looks like?

The listing adds: “PS5 info is temporary and can be changed for release.”

However, according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, the PS5 could be super expensive, thanks to higher tariffs on China from the US.

Hiroki Totoki, Chief Financial Officer at Sony, said: “We believe, and therefore have told the U.S. government, that higher tariffs would ultimately damage the U.S. economy.”
