There’s still well over a year to go before Sony finally unveils its PlayStation 5 , but despite this timeline, rumours are already coming thick and fast about the gaming console.
The latest rumour, courtesy of LetsGoDigital , gives us a hint at what the PS5 game cartridge could look like.
LetsGoDigital discovered an image of a mysterious game cartridge in a new patent published on November 5, and claims it could be for the PS5.
It wrote: “The application is internationally categorised as Class 14.99, with the description 'Miscellaneous', or 'Miscellaneous'. In Japan, however, this classification is described as 'Electronic game accessories'.
“Yujin Morisawa is the inventor of the new product, this is the senior art director of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
“Morisawa is responsible for all products associated with the PlayStation brand. Partly for this reason, it seems likely that Sony is developing this device for a new PlayStation product.”
An image from the patent shows a compact, thick game cartridge, but doesn’t show many other details.
LetsGoDigital added: “It is as yet unclear in which console this cartridge can be inserted. Since the patent was applied for by Sony Interactive Entertainment, it is obvious that this device will have to do with gaming.”
The image comes shortly after Jim Ryan, CEO at Sony, finally revealed new details about the PS5.
He said: “As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our [Sony's] tasks - probably our main task - is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before.”
Mr Ryan said that Sony is working on several first-party games that could ‘make or break’ the success of the PlayStation.
However, he added that Sony is already ‘hearing from developers and publishers [about] the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5’, which is reportedly ‘way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform.’
