Playing twins gave Rachel Weisz the appetite to eat 16 burgers on set

PLAYING twins in new show Dead Ringers had some perks for Rachel Weisz: she could eat for two on set.

Of one scene in a diner, Weisz said last night: “I did eat about 16 burgers in a shoot, so I felt not brilliant after. But then when do you get the chance to eat 16 burgers?” Weisz said she didn’t pace herself, because one of her characters was “all or nothing”.

The actress was speaking at a BFI Southbank screening of her new Amazon TV series, in which she plays Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twin gynecologists who confuse their clients, based on the 1980s film. Weisz explained that when she changed between the parts, the crew would change too, to help differentiate the roles. “We had it down to about 15 minutes between character changes,” she said.

Asked to give advice to budding actors at the Q&A, she joked: “Enjoy your food”.

Coronation is an opportunity for some

(Historic Royal Palaces, Conway Stewart)

Clever retailers are using the Coronation to flog a range of wares. Conway Stewart has a sterling silver pen on sale for £575, while Historic Royal Palaces, the charity which runs Kensington Palace and the Tower of London, is selling a £35 decoration. Emma Bridgewater has a mug, while Fortnum & Mason has a “trinkets box”. Some in the family will cash in too: Carole Middleton, mother of the Duchess of Cambridge, is selling items through her Party Pieces company, including flag bunting. It costs £4.99 for three metres.

Corbyn bashes Starmer

(PA)

Jeremy Corbyn has lashed out at Sir Keir Starmer after being purged from the Labour Party. Corbyn, writing in his local paper the Islington Tribune, says Sir Keir’s decision to stop him running as a Labour candidate is “an insult” to him and his supporters. He also accuses Sir Keir of “debasing democracy” and says he has “abandoned his pledges” that he made when running to be Labour leader.

Can we trust Boris on his ‘chicken run’?

When he was made Spectator editor in 1999, Boris Johnson promised the owner he wouldn’t run for Parliament. Soon after he was an MP. When he was Mayor, he said he’d stay out of the Commons, but returned. So can we trust his promise not to stand in the Tory safe seat of Henley at the next election? The current MP has said he will step down. Boris has reportedly bought a manor house near the constituency.

Panto rocks (oh yes it does)

Sir Ian McKellen looked chuffed to pick up the Special Recognition prize at the Pantomime Awards last night. He has been starring in the hit show Mother Goose. Vernon Kay got the best newcomer, while Su Pollard won outstanding achievement at the Trafalgar Theatre ceremony. Actress Neha Eapen got a newcomer gong, while Scott Mitchell, widower of Barbara Windsor, gave out a prize in Windsor’s name. Britne Oldford was at a special screening of TV show Dead Ringers.
