Playful dolphins filmed jumping alongside ship off Scottish coast

A pod of playful dolphins have been spotted performing a stunning aquatic display off the coast of Aberdeen.

The visitors on the private hire boat were delighted to see the sea creatures as they jumped alongside the ship before diving deep into the North Sea.

There were shouts and gasps of wonder from those on the boat as  the pod took turns to jump and dive.

Aberdeen Harbour tours take visitors off the city's coastline to watch the famed dolphins.

The company took a video of a recent tour, where the guests ask whether the animals are competing with each other for attention.

One asks 'Do you think they're showing off?' to which her companion replies 'of course they are'.

Another dolphin is described as a 'belly flopper' after a high dive.

The latest dolphin sighting comes after St Andrews university researchers took stunning pictures of bottlenose dolphins in Fife.

Animals were captured frolicking around in the Tay Estuary area by the surveying team as they returned to their research programme following an enforced break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Two groups were photographed in the Estuary near Tayport and another group between Crail and Anstruther as part of a long-term study of the bottlenose population off the eastern Scottish coast.

Surveys of the dolphins have been carried out between May and September each year since 1989 by the Sea Mammal Research Unit (which has been based at the University of St Andrews since 1996) and the University of Aberdeen.

The team are able to identify individual dolphins by the nicks or notches on the trailing edge of their dorsal fin.
