Players Championship: Errant shot drills fan, Rahm makes up for it

An errant shot by Jon Rahm in the final round of The Players Championship drilled a fan in the chest on the fourth hole at TPC Sawgrass.

The fan, who was standing along the fairway, appeared unscathed as he returned to watch Rahm take a swing where the ball stopped on the par-4 hole.

Rahm, the tournament’s leader entering Sunday, more than made up for the unfortunate shot. The 24-year-old from Spain apologized by signing a glove for the fan before moving on with his round.

Rahm, who bogeyed the hole, finished the round with a 76 as he continued to struggle on the back nine. Rahm was 3-over on the back nine and finished the tournament T12 at 11-under.

Rahm’s unfortunate shot Sunday at The Players isn’t the first time his ball hit a fan instead of the green. In the second round of the 2018 PGA Championship, Rahm’s opening drive bounced off a fan’s head on the 10th hole at Bellerive Country Club.

Just as on Sunday, Rahm approached the fan, offered an apology and signed another glove as he checked on the fan’s wellbeing.

The fan was conscious, smiled and insisted he was fine when Rham offered his apology, but still left with paramedics as a precaution.
