Player Jurgen Klopp desperately wanted handed final Liverpool chance thanks to Virgil van Dijk

It promises to be a season of significant importance for Joel Matip.

The towering defender is set to return to the Liverpool first-team for the new season after another campaign of injury hell for the 30-year-old.

Much of Matip's Liverpool career has involved setbacks, preventing the former Cameroonian international from establishing himself as a dependable figure within the side.

Transfermarkt data suggests he has missed 105 Liverpool games as a result of his injury troubles, having been ruled out at various points of each of his five seasons at the club.

He has made just 95 league appearances since 2016, a total which equates to making just 19 outings per season. On average, Liverpool can only rely on him for half a campaign each year.

Despite his injury issues, Matip has remained a player Jurgen Klopp has admired.

Dating back to the German's time as Borussia Dortmund boss, it was clear to see how highly Klopp rated the defender.

"He never played for my team, he did the extreme opposite - he played for their biggest opponent! Maybe that says a lot about his quality. Even when he played for the team you cannot love as Dortmund manager, you see his quality. Then that's real quality," said Klopp after the signing of Matip in 2016.

He added: "He's a perfect header of the ball, makes four or five goals a season and is good in the build-up. He was an easy choice. I know in England it's very difficult to bring a player without paying a transfer fee, but I thought that was not a reason not to take him - just because we couldn't write a big number behind his name.

"Ask other clubs in Germany what they would have paid to get him if he still had a contract and use that number."

The Liverpool boss has remained loyal to the injury-prone defender, who may now have one final chance to repay Klopp.

Matip looks set to start the season for the Reds due to being in the best physical state compared to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez and must now seize this opportunity to impress.

Daniel Sturridge is one example of a player who ran out of luck at Liverpool after lengthy injury lay-offs throughout the course of his Anfield stay - a situation the former Schalke centre-back will look to avoid at all costs.

Liverpool supporters are well aware of the quality possessed by Matip, it's now a case of being able to witness this on a regular basis.
