Play on as Jets return to training

HOME TURF: Jets coach Ash Wilson said hosting Melbourne Victory at No.2 Sportsground on Saturday provided Newcastle with the opportunity to "redeem ourselves". Picture: Marina Neil

Jets coach Ash Wilson said it was "business as usual" this week and being "adaptable" was part of the game in a COVID-19 world.

Newcastle's W-League side flew to Melbourne last Friday to play City on Saturday but were quickly headed home after Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced the state was headed for a five-day lockdown due to more coronavirus cases.

Players and team staff were uncertain as to whether they would need to follow Victoria's five-day lockdown ruling once back in NSW on Friday night but were able to resume training Monday.

"We kept watching all of the health advice that was coming through," Wilson told the Newcastle Herald on Monday.

"We all ended up having a COVID test on Saturday morning as a precaution and have all come back negative, so we're training today.

"Initially, we had thought we would have to do the five-day isolation, but as the health advice changed our situation changed and we were able to go back to normal as soon as we returned a negative result."

Newcastle's focus last week had been on a "must-win" match with City but, after having the round-eight encounter postponed, Wilson said they had adjusted this week's schedule and were taking the last-minute changes "all in our stride".

They now turn their focus to Melbourne Victory, who they are scheduled to host at No.2 Sportsground on Saturday. There is as yet no draw beyond this weekend's round-nine fixtures.

"This season is what it is and you have to be adaptable and just continue to wait for any changes, but you plan as if you're playing the original schedule and then you adapt as it goes," Wilson said.

"At the moment, word from today is that it's still as is, but that potentially could change and if it does we just adapt."

Victory held a 3-0 half-time lead before beating Newcastle 4-2 on February 7. The result left the Jets sixth on four points as they reached their season midpoint. Victory improved to 10 points and are now fifth, one point behind fourth-placed Canberra.

"They responded well after half-time [against Victory] but they definitely know that they had a lot more to give," Wilson said of her players.

"They're not really concerned about the last result. They want that opportunity to prove that they're better than that and I think it does give us a good opportunity to redeem ourselves so close."

Newcastle beat Western Sydney 4-1 when they last played at No.2 Sportsground on January 23.
