'Play him'- Tottenham fans make Alfie Devine demand ahead of Rennes Conference League clash

Tottenham fans have demanded to see young midfielder Alfie Devine feature in the Europa Conference League this week in the first group game against Rennes on Thursday.

Devine, 17, scored twice as the young Lillywhites defeated Liverpool on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League 2.

The young midfielder made history last season during Tottenham's FA Cup run that saw them face Non-League Merseyside-based outfit Marine FC in the third round of the competition.

Spurs' young starlet- who was aged 16 years and 163 days old at the time of his first senior appearance- only took 15 minutes to make his mark when he scored the fifth goal of the contest after he replaced Moussa Sissoko at the start of the second half.

Since then, supporters of the north London club have been keeping a close eye on the development of a player who could turn out to be Tottenham's next Dele Alli as the fans eagerly await the next generation of players to grace the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pitch.

And Devine's latest performance for the Under 23s has prompted calls from the fanbase for him to make an appearance in the upcoming Europa Conference League game against the Ligue 1 based outfit.

Here's how a selection of fans reacted on social media to Tottenham's latest post about the 17-year-old.

@clivetomkins1 questioned: 'Why is he playing for the under 23s? Put him in instead of Winks....'

@HangryHiggs also asked: 'How winks starts over him is baffling.'

@AMoneyyy18 has demanded: 'Play him in the conference league game.'

@JonoFair similarly put: 'Stick him in the first team. Got to be better than Winks and gives him a chance to prove himself. No brainer really.'

@larkini reckons: 'Genuinely think he would do a better job in our midfield than what we witnessed from the senior team yesterday..'

@TottenhamKisitu wants to be positive on the situation regardless of if he plays or not this week for the first team: 'Ooooo we won our under 23 is good at least anyways let's keep pushing the support and give a boost to our players.... come on you Spurs.'

Coincidentally, these opinions on the midfielder come just after the first team's midfield woes were exposed badly against a rejuvenated Crystal Palace side who ran riot at Selhurst Park over the weekend.

Furthermore, these claims aren't as outlandish as initially expected and seeing Devine take his only chance last season demonstrates his hunger to make the step up from the under 23s in a swift manor.

If Ian Wright's and Alan Shearer's words are anything to go by, then Nuno Espirito Santo needs to seriously consider the youngsters' inclusion for Thursday night.

“He’ll be very proud and so he should be," said Shearer on the BBC post the Marine win.

"It was a brilliant finish, the way he shifts the ball - it gives the keeper no chance.

"He moves it, short backlift, near-post, very good strike. 16!”

Former Arsenal striker Wright - who was unsurprisingly repping a Marine hat on that occasion- added: “As soon as it hits the net, look at his face!

"I can’t even remember being 16. It was a great goal.”
