Play about LeBron’s return to Cleveland will play in Chicago and L.A.

Another depiction of LeBron James’ career is on the way, but it won’t be a LeBron James production.

The triumphant return of LeBron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which culminated in the 2016 NBA Championship, will be the subject of a new theatrical play that will debut later this year in Chicago.

The L.A. Times reported on Thursday that the play ‘King James,’ written by playwright Rajiiv Joseph, will debut on May 7 in Chicago before coming to Los Angeles in early 2020. According to the report, it will center on James’ time in Cleveland and what it meant.

From Jessica Gelt of the L.A. Times

Early details are scant, but the CTG announcement did include this description: “ ‘King’ LeBron James’ reign in Cleveland brings promise, prosperity and renewal to a city in desperate need of all three. As the city celebrates a championship, two estranged friends spar in a verbal game of 1 on 1, revealing past secrets, present truths, and a possible future after ‘The King’ has left the building.”

The show will be hosted by the Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago before it gets taken over by the Center Theatre Group of Los Angeles the following year.
