Our Spear & Jackson stainless steel spade broke after some years of use. On contacting the firm, and after sending a photograph, it was replaced with a brand new and improved version. No hassle, no problems. They are not the cheapest, but quality and service seems to be what you pay for.

Also this week, an expensive LED light bulb in the Consumer Champs’ kitchen went after a year or so. We didn’t have the receipt and couldn’t remember where we had bought it, so phoned the manufacturer, Philips. A nice woman in Holland took down our details and three days later a replacement arrived. Excellent service – and no, we didn’t tell her we worked for the Guardian.
