Platt Fields Park left in a 'disgusting' state after 'hundreds' of people attended St Patrick's Day gatherings there

Piles of rubbish have been left strewn across a south Manchester park after hundreds of people attended lockdown St Patrick's Day gatherings there.

Pictures taken at Platt Fields Park on Thursday morning show hundreds of empty beer cans and bottles, supermarket carrier bags and other waste left on the ground.

Police were called to the Fallowfield park on Wednesday following reports of large groups of people drinking and playing music.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, described people with ‘loudspeakers’ waving Irish flags and urinating on his garden fence.

They said: "I think there must be 500 people there all breaking Covid rules. They’ve got loudspeakers, Irish flags and they’ve been urinating up my back fence. Our yard backs onto the park.

"I think it’s just disgusting. It’s exactly the same as it was a few weeks ago but worse.

"Because it’s St Patrick’s Day this will go on long into the night I’m sure.

"I just don’t get people. They will probably go back to halls and see people who have been trying to live by the rules. These people are just flouting the rules. It shows a total disregard for other people."

Police said they were “engaging” with those present.

No fines were issued.

It comes just weeks after police warned about large gatherings in the park.

Under current lockdown rules, outdoor mixing is only permitted with your own household, or with one other person.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Police have been called to reports of several groups of people gathering at Platt Fields Park and are currently in attendance to engage with those present."

Earlier this month police issued a statement urging people not to gather at outdoor spaces like Platt Fields Park during lockdown.
