Plate Day at Newcastle Racecourse draws closer to Ladies Day in the fashion stakes

An absolutely roasting afternoon greeted the punters who flocked to Plate Day on Saturday and there were some equally hot outfits to match the temperatures.

After a rather cloudy and muggy start, the weather at Newcastle Racecourse lived up to the sweltering forecast, with temperatures in the mid-20s as a huge crowd flocked to enjoy a card of eight races including the big one - the Betfair Exchange Northumberland Plate.

And both the lads and lasses of Newcastle didn’t disappoint when it came to dressing for the occasion with both sexes going all out for the big day.

Aside from skyscraper heels and equally high fascinators, polka dots proved to be a big trend for the girls, with many accenting their black and white ensembles with a flash of red.

Different shades of blue were also out in force for the ladies while for the men, tweed as it always is, was well represented. Suit jackets were left at home in favour of waistcoats and rolled-up shirt sleeves and there were also a few pork pie hats spotted, a nod to the evening’s star attraction - Madness.

As you’d expect, there was a smattering of fancy dress, with a few stags in jockey regalia, and also plenty of hen do and birthday girl sashes accessorising some glamorous dresses as friends celebrated their own special occasions at Plate Day .
