Plastic use continues in Jamshedpur markets despite ban

JAMSHEDPUR: Despite ban, single-use plastic bags are being openly used in markets across Jamshedpur.

Uttam Mahato, who runs a dosa stall in Aerodrome market area, said they are forced to use banned plastic bags as many customers refuse to shell out extra for the bags that are permitted.

Robi Mandal, who sells fish in Kadma market, said customers are reluctant to bring bags of their own and pester for plastic bags.

Many of the shopkeepers, who followed the rule book initially, and shunned the use of single-use plastic bags have now begun using the same.

Ahead of the Durga Puja, East Singhbhum SSP Prabhat Kumar flagged off vehicles here to create awareness among residents and businessmen about the ill-effects of single-use plastic bags, which are harmful for the environment.

Kumar appealed to the masses that plastic should not be used at any public places and hoped people would abide by the ban imposed on it even during festival time. ADM (law and order) Nand Kishore Lal too stressed on the ban on plastic use as it is an environmental hazard.
