Plaque for night of Ben Stokes' Bristol brawl removed from Mbargo

A sign saying "It was here that Ben Stokes lamped an oik" has been removed from the front of a Bristol nightclub.

England's cricket hero was involved in an altercation outside Mbargo in the Clifton Triangle on September 25, 2017.

Images emerged on Saturday (August 31) of a mock-up blue plaque outside the bar in commemoration of what it called "Brizzle Heritage".

But when we visited the site this morning (September 3), the sign was no longer there.

We have approached Mbargo for comment on the plaque and its removal.

It was placed days after Kai Barry, 28, and William O'Connor, 22, said Stokes should get a knighthood for defending them from 'homophobic abuse' outside Mbargo during the brawl, as well as his recent Ashes heroics.

Mr Barry told The Sun: “There’s no question he should get a knighthood. He saved us, now he’s saved the Ashes.

"Ben risked his career for us. He’s my hero. He’s showed immense strength of character.

“I thought he was just a normal lad, sticking up for someone who was weaker than he was, which was quite nice.

“When I realised who he was I thought ‘fair play’, because obviously he’s put his career on risk for someone he never knew.”

Mr O’Connor added: “He could see the people doing what they were doing and how homophobic they were and how nasty they came across."

Stokes' Ashes performance on August 25 has been praised as one of the most incredible displays from an Englishman in the history of Test cricket.

Everything you need to know about Ben Stokes

England were bowled out for a dismal 67 in the first innings and appeared to be facing certain defeat at 286-9 in pursuit of 359, but Stokes' unbeaten 135 saw them triumph.
