Plaque erected in honour of late CervicalCheck campaigner Laura Brennan

A plaque in honour of CervicalCheck campaigner Laura Brennan has been unveiled at the Queen’s Hotel in Ennis, Co Clare.

The 26-year-old Clare woman passed away in 2019 - three years after her cervical cancer diagnosis.

Clare FM shared the news that “outgoing" Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Mary Howard had unveiled the plaque this morning.

Laura’s family say the plaque “will act as a further continuation of her legacy.”

The black and white plaque features one pop of colour - the blue HPV vaccine symbol.

Etched into the granite plaque is Laura’s image and and a quote from her which reads “Live the best possible life you can, #ProtectOurFutures.”

In the last year of her life, Laura made huge contributions to HPV vaccine advocacy and was awarded with Clare Person of the Year.

The HSE say Laura was “determined that every parent in Ireland who was about to make the decision whether their child was to be vaccinated, would hear her story first.

“This illness is devastating and it’s going to take my life but the good news is there’s a vaccine that you can get that prevents it. HPV caused my cancer. I just wanted parents to know there is an alternative.” said Laura at the time.

In the last years of her life, The World Health Organisation invited Laura to the WHO’s European headquarters in Copenhagen to discuss her advocacy of the vaccine, and she was invited to extend her advocacy of the vaccine across Europe.

Laura was given an honorary doctorate of literature by University College Dublin and received many awards and medals in recognition of her advocacy.

Her RTE documentary, Laura Brennan: This is Me is available to watch on the RTE player.
