Plans unveiled to turn former Mansfield Natwest bank into pizza restaurant and takeaway

The site of a disused former Natwest building could be transformed after plans were revealed for a pizza restaurant and takeaway outlet.

The development, in High Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, could see the former bank given a new lease of life while also creating jobs for people in the area.

It has been put forward by Fireaway Stores Ltd, a company which promises to provide employment and a "much needed economic boost" to the Mansfield Woodhouse community.

Plans put forward by the developer say that the new outlet would have a small indoor seating area for customers, attracting people and businesses in the area for food.

It is unclear at this stage which brand would take on the renovated site if plans are approved by Mansfield District Council.

A spokesperson for the developer said: "The proposal would provide very small internal seating area for patrons to enjoy hot cooked food, especially for local shoppers and [the] community.

"The proposal intends to also provide much needed economic boost to the existing unit by providing a new restaurant and takeaway within the parade with seating thereby attracting patrons from the local community and businesses.

"The restaurant use would in turn also provide the employment of extra staff from the community.

"The proposed use would include the cooking of freshly made pizza which as a by-product would not cause strong smells nor excessive smoke.

"[It] will also include new shop front with a central door and new sign to overhang the pavement."

News of the development has received a lukewarm reception from a councillor in the area, who had mixed feelings about the proposed new use.

Councillor Amanda Fisher represents the nearby Woodhouse ward and fears a takeaway is not the right "way to go" for her town.

"I'm obviously pleased that the building is being used, but whether it's appropriate to have another takeaway I'm not so convinced," she told Nottinghamshire Live.

"The whole of the High Street and Station Street need to be looked at in terms of regeneration because it's quite dilapidated.

"So on the one hand it's a good thing that it's being used, but I'm not sure another takeaway is the way to go.

"With the way we're looking at the health of Mansfield residents and the publication of the Healthy Mansfield report, is it a good idea?

"Losing the bank was bad enough because it's impacted heavily on people either having to go into town or using the Post Office.

"While it's good news in a way, I'm still on the fence of whether it should be a fast food takeaway.

"Maybe the planning department need to look at it more closely, with ways to implement the Healthy Mansfield strategies more closely."

Nottinghamshire Live understands that the Natwest bank closed between 2015 and 2016.

The proposals are expected to be reviewed by planners on Mansfield District Council later this year.
