Plans unveiled for up to 190 homes and a hotel in Gateshead

A patch of waste land on the edge of Gateshead town centre could be transformed as early proposals for a major new development have been lodged with the authority.

Gateshead Council have applied for permission in principle for between 140 and 190 homes on a plot off West Askew Road.

Permission in Principle (PIP) means that the suitability of the site for housing will be looked at with other matters such as the type of housing to be considered later.

The land, know as the St Cuthbert's Clearance Area, used to have housing on it, but those homes were pulled down and it has since become derelict and overgrown.

A hotel or office block of up to 1,600 square metres could also be built along with an "assembly and leisure building".

Buildings in that category include cinemas, music and concert halls, bingo and dance halls, but not night clubs, swimming baths, skating rinks, gymnasiums or area for indoor or outdoor sports.

The council say the development is unlikely to have a significant impact on the environment and the site is not "considered environmentally sensitive".

Gateshead Council's planning department have recommended permission in principle be granted saying future development would fit in with the area.

A report to the planning committee said: "It is considered that a suitable detailed scheme of development could be achieved which would be acceptable in terms of its impact on the character and appearance of the area."

Gateshead Council's planning committee will vote on the proposals on Wednesday.
