Plans unveiled for new £2 million bridge over the A77

Plans have been lodged to build a new £2 million bridge over the A77.

If approved, the illuminated structure will link Ayr’s Maybole Road to new housing across the trunk road on fields in Corton.

It would be for the use of walkers and cyclists making their way across the 60mph carriageway.

Designs lodged with South Ayrshire Council show the pedestrian link is to be illuminated with white lighting at night.

Allanvale Homes (Prestwick) have applied for planning permission to erect the overpass.

The bridge is a condition of an approved planning application in principle for a huge development in the rural area.

No building can take place until the bridge has been given the green light by South Ayrshire Council.

The Corton development -  which has been dubbed South East Ayr - was originally approved in 2014 but it has still not happened.

It suffered a setback when Sainsbury’s pulled out in 2016. There were plans for more than 700 homes, a supermarket and even a school.

The new application for the bridge link to Corton is currently being considered by planning officials and was  lodged in July.

A design and access statement, which accompanied planning documents submitted to the council, said the bridge provides “new sustainable transport opportunities” and will give views across the countryside.

The bridge deck is to be four metres wide according to plans while no decision has been made yet on the scheme.
