Plans unveiled for future of Dublin's iconic fruit and vegetable market

Plans for the future of Dublin's iconic fruit and vegetable market have been unveiled.

The market between Capel Street and Smithfield closed its doors back on Friday 23 August.

And now Dublin City Council has revealed the future for the site which will be closed and re-developed over the next two years.

According to the plans, the Chancery Street yard will be transformed into a new entrance from the Luas line with outdoor seating and a space for the public.

While the Daisy Market will have a cafe with another outdoor seating area.

The market building will see a cafe and restaurant and half the market will be fitted out with retail stalls and cages similar to those seen in London's Borough Market.

For locals there will be a multi-use games area that includes all-weather facilities, and parking for those using the market facility.

Dublin Chamber has welcomed the plans and said it brings the re-development one step closer.

They said: "Just 6 weeks after the closure of the Fruit & Vegetable Market near Smithfield, we’re pleased to see Dublin City Council move quickly to publish draft plans for the future of the building.

"The plans - unveiled this week - include proposals for a restaurant/cafe with outdoor seating, a new improved south-facing entrance close to the Luas line, and “retail stalls ... similar to those used in the London Borough Markets”.

"The plans are encouraging and we look forward to seeing the redevelopment commence as soon as possible. Dublin has waited long enough for a world-class market. This plan brings it one vital step closer."
