Plans to turn Nottingham temple into housing for 'young professionals'

Plans have been submitted to turn a Nottingham temple into 15 flats.

The Hindu temple, currently operating at 102 Palm Street, New Basford, would be turned into a set of apartments if plans are approved.

The temple, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, is currently closed until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new housing, which would consist of one-bed apartments, would be aimed at young professionals.

All apartments would have open plan living, dining and kitchen space, while there would be designated plant room areas on either side of the building.

Applicants Hockley Developments state: “The proposed works to be carried out on the property will have a positive effect on the local economy by providing accommodation for young professionals, or similar, looking to live in an affordable, family-friendly, residential area while still being close to the convenience of city centre amenities.

“Furthermore, the size and location of the development will be highly sought after by residents trying to live and work close to Nottingham City Centre.”

Hockley Developments say Palm Street is an attractive place to live due to being a quiet suburb with close access to city centre amenities.

There is a large demand for residential housing in New Basford, according to the applicants.

They add: "To avoid future years of disuse and financial drain the buildings at 102 Palm Street would benefit greatly from the proposed conversion.

“The surrounding area will also benefit from the increased human activity levels, to promote healthy social relationships within the community and to support natural security levels of the area.

“We believe the development will deliver a vibrant residential scheme filled with a diverse mix of people from young professionals to older residents looking to downsize, supporting Nottingham City housing aspirations.”

The application will now be considered by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee.
