Plans to turn much-loved pub and music venue into flats

A once popular Southport pub could soon be turned into flats.

The Fox and Goose on Cable Street has been empty for around six months.

It was known for its live music offering - with a notable performance from Space, as well as many tribute bands - and had a host of regular customers.

But the last pint has probably been poured in the pub, with developers looking to create eight self-contained apartments.

Documents listed on Sefton Council 's website show Trent Homes Ltd want to build three one-bedroom flats, and five two-bedroom flats, across the building's three floors.

Some people living in Southport have mourned the loss of the Fox and Goose.

Chris Wright said: "This place was part of my growing up. Very sad news."

Dave Warren said: "I spent so much time in there, it's sad to see it die."

Kathy Briggs added: "The old Steamboat...  good times."

The Fox and Goose is just one of many of the town's pubs to close in the last two years.

In March last year, the Exclusive Piano bar on Coronation Walk closed its doors for the final time. Soon after, the Falstaff on King Street shut up shop.

The Blundell Arms in Birkdale - which was the subject of a long-fought community battle - was also earmarked for housing, but a devastating fire ripped through the building this weekend.

The incident led to the collapse of a large section of the roof and a lot of windows being knocked through. An investigation is currently being carried out by the authorities.
