Plans to turn Mansfield's Urban Cherry nightclub into flats could 'breathe new life' into town

New apartments could take the place of a former nightlife hot spot.

Planning permission has been sought to change the use of 18-20 Church Street in Mansfield from nightclub to residential.

What was once The Old Eight Bells, records date the pub back to 1832.

Later in life, the building became home to the Urban Cherry nightclub, which is now closed.

The nightclub once described itself as "Mansfield's only exclusive Urban music venue playing RnB, Hip Hop and Dancehall Reggae".

Now, developers are hoping they will be allowed to place 12 flats into the Victorian/Edwardian architecturally influenced building.

Nikki Rolls, chief executive of Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID) said: "There is a drive to create urban centres that are ideal places in which to live, work, and play. Therefore it is good to see plans coming forward to turn a historical empty building back into use.

"Hopefully, this development, which should attract some professionals or young families will breathe new life into that area of the town centre."

In the design and access statement, developers on behalf of the applicant Paul Dermody Pension, claim that "the building has become increasingly difficult to maintain and is no longer attractive to the market for retail or similar uses. The prospects for any future commercial use of the property are remote".

The flats will be split into one and two-bed flats - two one-bed duplex flats, five one-bed flats, one two-bed flat, four two-bed flats.

There will be no parking provisions.

Mansfield District Council's planning committee will make their decision in the coming weeks.
