Plans to turn long-vacant former social club into four-bed HMO

Plans to turn a once-popular former social club into flats have been submitted to Newport City Council.

The proposals would see the Boilermakers Club on Albany Street, Newport, turned into a four-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO), according to an application on the council website last week.

The old social club has been vacant for more than five years since closing in 2015, but could now become flats after the building's new owners held a Zoom consultation where residents in the area stated that they would prefer it to be used as residential accommodation.

An opinion poll was also delivered to residents in the two adjoining streets asking if they would prefer the building to remain as a club for the community's benefit, a club downstairs with residential accommodation upstairs, or accommodation only.

All three residents who replied to the poll said they would prefer residential accommodation only, citing parking facilities, loud noise and anti-social behaviour as primary reasons for their choice.

Residents cited other pubs and clubs, the area's proximity to the city centre and changes to living and working conditions since the pandemic began as reasons for not wanting to retain the building as a community space.

The application is awaiting a decision from the council.
