Plans to turn historic hotel into homeless hostel in Mansfield

Plans have been submitted to convert a historic hotel into a homeless hostel in Mansfield.

The Midland Hotel is located on Station Road in the town and dates back to the 1800s.

It is a Grade II listed building and currently has 24 bedrooms, and is used as a public house and restaurant.

Originally used as a psychiatric hospital when it was built in 1805, in 1862 it was purchased by the Midland Railway Company and converted it into a hotel.

Applicants CIC Naskam Community Interest Company want to change its use to a supported accommodation hostel for vulnerable people.

A heritage assessment submitted alongside the planning application states there will be no physical changes to the building, which is close to Mansfield Railway Station.

It says: "The primary works will be around aesthetic, making rooms into good livable spaces with new decor and in making good any damages in line with the current housing act.

"The change of use is not for material changes, so there will be no significant impact on its historic fabric or features.

"The conservation, maintenance and enhancement of heritage assets will be a high priority with the organisation will draw on specialists that can deliver appropriate services tailored to the needs of the asset and in helping to improve the heritage the overall nature of the asset."

The building is described as "in a state of disrepair" and one that needs work done to "bring it up to standard".

Historic England and the Environment Agency declined to comment on the application.

It will now be considered by Mansfield District Council's planning committee.
