Plans to turn Byker pub into 'higher end establishment designed to attract more affluent clientele'

Plans have been unveiled to turn a Newcastle social club into a “higher end and quality establishment designed to attract a more affluent clientele”.

The Key Club, also known as the Byker and Heaton Union Club, has been a favourite on Shields Road for decades.

Now G Leisure Property Development has applied for a new premises licence for the site.

The application, lodged with Newcastle City Council, says, “The premises has operated as a licensed premises for several years under its previous ownership and has now been fully renovated to a higher end and quality establishment designed to attract a more affluent clientele as opposed to other bars in the area.”

It says the company is seeking a new premises licence for the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises only from 10am until 11pm every day.

The application says, “The premises is a local high street environment with a mixture of commercial units surrounding it and is largely set away from residential housing.

“Prior to the premises opening for trade all staff will receive effective and thorough training in relation to the supply of alcohol to customers on the premises and such training will continue at regular intervals and will be mandatory prior to any new staff commencing employment.”

It adds: “The applicant is an experienced leisure company owning/operating several bars/pubs in the North East area.”

The venue is described as a “public house/bar with internal areas and outside pavement area which can hold tables and chairs”.

The site is across the road from Shields Road success story Chucho’s, which has amassed a reputation for arguably making the tastiest tacos on Tyneside.

Initially opening on the Byker street in 2017, the Mexican eatery then moved into the site of the Lord Clyde pub's old restaurant last year.
