Plans to transform never-used business centre in Old Basford into modern apartments

Residents have backed ambitious plans to transform a derelict business centre in Old Basford into more than a dozen modern apartments.

The Irwin Business Centre, in Church Street, was built a decade ago and has been vandalised having never been occupied.

The roof of the building has been damaged, windows have been ripped out and there is graffiti on some of the walls.

Developers want to give the building a much-needed revamp by converting it into 24 apartments.

Local residents and workers said the project could bring "more use to the area".

Jennifer Hayes, 45, a sales assistant, of Perry Road, in Sherwood, said: “More and more people need places to live so, if it makes it easier for them to find somewhere, I think it should be done.”

Paul Marsden, 59, a labourer, of Isandula Road, Basford, said: “Hopefully, it will bring more use to the area than the building does now."

Emma Perry, 26, a care worker, of Hadbury Road, Sherwood, said: “I work up the road so a lot of my staff are young workers looking for their own place to live. It would be convenient for more people than we would expect.”

John Buluma, 67, who lives in Basford, said: “It would bring more to the area because if people have somewhere comfortable to live they will be more inclined to work around here which can only be a positive thing in my eyes.”

Mae Mckey, 61, of Basford, said: “It’s sad that they (developers) build all these big buildings and let them go derelict when they could be used for better things and help get people off the streets.”

Wendy Martin, 63, of Rosetta Road, Basford, added the building served no purpose in its current form.

The building faces the railway and tram lines.

Developers want to convert the upper floors of the four-storey building to create the new apartments, with eight per-floor.

Each would have a bedroom and a separate kitchen/dining/living room and shower room.

The applicant was listed as Mr B Mehat, of Mehat Developments Ltd, and the planning agent, working on behalf of the developer, was listed as Alison Dudley, of Zenith Planning and Design.
