Plans to transform 1930s Edinburgh police box on Heriot Row into coffee and food stop

Plans have been submitted to completely transform a former police box into a brand new coffee and food stop.

The New Town police box on Heriot Row, near the junction with India Street, looks pretty run down thanks to the graffiti sprayed across it.

But it could be about to get a makeover after change of use plans were submitted to Edinburgh Council.

The owner says they wish to "create a coffee outlet to serve the local community around Heriot Row".

They add that that two panels will be removed to create space for removable counters and wrap around shutter doors.

An awning will also be installed, which will have the new signage printed across the front of it.

In line with new coronavirus safety measures for businesses, perspex sheeting will be installed at head height at the counter opening.

This is just one of Edinburgh's iconic polices box dating back to the 1930s, once used by bobbies on the beat to check in with the station and receive their marching orders.

In 2014, Edinburgh's final batch of police boxes were being sold off which saw many of them being turned into fully functioning mini cafés, serving everything from crepes to Afro-Caribbean streetfood.
