Plans to tackle speeding and dodgy parking around Renfrew High revealed

Plans to install long-awaited road safety measures next to Renfrew High School have been revealed by Renfrewshire Council.

Traffic-calming chicanes, pedestrian crossings and formalised parking areas have been laid out in pre-consultation proposals for Haining Road.

It is hoped the move will address issues residents and councillors have raised around speeding and inconsiderate parking, with the public due to be consulted on the plans in the coming weeks.

Councillors John Shaw and Jane Strang - who represent the area - both said they have been pushing for measures around the school for the past couple of years.

Councillor Strang said the proposals were long overdue and she urged everyone to make their voices heard in the consultation.

She said "Residents have constantly brought this issue to my attention since I was elected [in 2017] and I have pushed council officials to come up with a plan to avoid serious accidents happening around these roads.

“With Renfrew High School nearby, measures to improve safety and have dedicated pedestrian crossings in place are long overdue.

“The officials bringing these proposals forward is a vindication of the community complaining about this issue and when these plans are brought forward, I would encourage everyone to get involved in the consultation.

“This is a step in the right direction and I’ll be studying the plans to see that they will finally deliver a solution."

The plans show footway build-outs would be installed right outside the school as well as at the Sandy Park end of Haining Road.

There are also specific locations drawn up for pedestrian crossings with the aim of making the area safer for students making their way in and out of school.

Councillor Shaw said he had not only been approached by residents about their concerns but also by Renfrew High head Billy Burke.

He added: "I was pleased to see pre-consultation plans released for possible road safety improvements on Haining Road.

"This is something I have been pushing for for a couple of years now after speaking to residents and the headteacher at Renfrew High about their concerns.

"These measures providing pedestrian crossing locations, traffic calming chicanes and formalised parking areas should hopefully cut down on some of the safety issues with speed and inconsiderate parking we see at times on the road and should go out for public consultation in the near future."

Iain Nicolson, Renfrewshire Council leader, added: “ I was pleased to see the proposed safety improvements on Haining Road. These improvements are the latest in several local projects where SNP councillors have led the way in acting on constituents' concerns."
