Plans to send autistic boy, 4, to mainstream Fife school overturned after Record story

The decision to send an autistic four-year-old boy to a mainstream primary school has been overturned after the Record intervened.

Last month, we told how Stephanie Ross’s request for additional education support for her son Struan was denied by Fife Council.

Stephanie, 31, had applied to have Struan, who is non-verbal, not toilet trained and has learning support needs, placed in nearby Rimbleton Primary School’s additional support class in Glenrothes.

But Fife Council rejected her plea and ruled Struan would attend Rimbleton’s mainstream school.

Stephanie appealed for the council to re-examine its ruling over her son’s case - and it duly overturned its original decision. Stephanie said: “I’m just so glad the decision has been reversed.

“I’m now not worried for Struan starting primary one. I feel he’ll now get a fair chance at his education.

“I couldn’t be happier.

“I’m so grateful to the Daily Record. I don’t think it would have gone as far as it did without the Record covering our story.”

Struan will now attend Rimbleton Primary’s additional support class from August.

Stephanie’s original application was backed by an educational psychologist, a speech and language therapist and Struan’s nursery, who all agreed a mainstream class would not meet Struan’s needs.

Last night, mum-of-two Stephanie added: “I’d also like to thank Fife Council too for upholding my appeal.”

Fife Council education chief Phil Black said: “In all such cases, we follow due process including an opportunity to appeal.”
