Plans to replace entire Southport Pier decking as landmark is 'rotting from within'

Southport's most popular tourist attraction is in need of replacement as it is "rotting from within".

Southport Pier is a mainstay for many families during the summer holidays and according to a report published last month, its decking is in need of major repair. The Grade II listed pier which opened in 1860 is the oldest of its kind in the country and is also the second-longest pier in Britain.

Sefton Council is expected to approve £206,053 of spending so the ‘Southport Pier Decking Project’ repair works can be undertaken. The entirety of the decking will need to be replaced according to the report and if approved it will be installed in serval phases.

In a report to Sefton Council, Executive Director of Corporate Resources and Customer Services Stephan Van Arendsen said: "The asset is a critical element to Southport’s visitor economy along with the wider economy of the borough.

"The decking is rotting from within meaning it is only detected when a timber piece snaps. The Council employed a specialist timber expert who devised a programme of works and the specification of timber."

“The Council sets aside an amount of funding each year towards a sinking fund that is intended for periodic repairs and replacement works such as those specified above. It will be necessary to add an additional £91,256 during 2022/23 to fund the decking project as the current balance on the fund is insufficient to cover the full cost.

“Future annual contributions to the sinking fund will be reduced to reflect the additional contribution in 2022/23 to ensure there is no additional cost to the Council."

A full council meeting will be held on Thursday, May 19, and councillors will be asked to provide the funds for the work.
