Plans to raise taxis fares across Cardiff revealed

Plans to increase taxi fares across Cardiff have been revealed, with people on nights out set to be worst hit.

The taxi firm have applied to Cardiff council to hike fares by almost 5%.

The south Wales wide company fares should increase due to an increase in costs, including the rising cost of fuel, and to help pay drivers more.

They have applied on behalf of the trade so the proposal would affect all taxis which use a meter.

Alongside other planned increases, it would see a two-mile journey at 10pm that currently costs £6.10 jump up to £7.40.

The proposal wants to bring forward when an additional £1 is added to journeys. At the moment this happens for journeys from midnight until 6am, but the company want it to start from 10pm.

The council will consider the plans at a cabinet meeting on Friday.

A council report said: "Consideration should be given to obtaining a balance between increasing the fare to compensate in the increase of costs of running a hackney carriage, and ensuring that the increase does not deter the public from using hackney carriages."

Dragon Taxis' application wants to increase the charge of the first 103 yards by 10p to £2.60.

After that, 20p will be charged for each subsequent 185 yards - decreased from 195 yards.

Under the proposals an average two mile journey would go up from £6.10 to £6.40.

In a letter by Dragon Taxis managing director, Ryan Owen, submitted to the council in December, he said: "In real terms driver partners are now earning 5.4% less than they were just over two years ago and this application will bring them back up within a reasonable level of inflation."

He added: "This application is for a 4.93% increase on the average 2.5 mile fare, which I believe is a reasonable amount when you take into account the increases in costs that are affecting drivers."

A council report says the application should be recommended, provided their are no objections, and that the new prices should come into effect from April 1.

Dragon Taxis have been approached for comment.
