Plans to knock down former long-standing Canton business and build flats

A block of flats is set to replace a former long-standing business in Canton.

Plans have been submitted to knock down the former Radiocraft store on Cowbridge Road East and build apartments.

The development, in between a Tesco store and the Ivor Davies Wetherspoons pub, would be split across two blocks. A shared courtyard would separate the two blocks.

If approved the development would have seven two-bedroom and three one-bedroom flats, alongside a ground floor commercial unit.

The current unit has been vacant since March 2020.

Taff Housing, the developers, say they want to "replicate the successful" redevelopment of the former Canton police station nearby.

The commercial unit would use the entire ground floor space, with the flats built to the rear and above.

The developers say there is precedent for similar buildings on the road, including five recent developments.

Pre-application advice was given to the developers by a senior planning officer in October 2020. Feedback included "the acceptance of the principle of the proposals", according to planning documents.

Other comments included that "more interest" was needed for the street-facing elevation and that more amenity space was needed.

The latest proposals, the developers say, reflect onboard the feedback given.

Cardiff council planning committee will discuss the plans at a later date.
