Plans to introduce parking charges in Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead announced

Motorists are to be charged to park on the street and in council owned car parks in Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead.

North Somerset Council is proposing to introduce parking charges in a number of its car parks and on street in the three towns.

The move follows a review into parking charging and regulations right across the district by the authority.

As a result major changes are planned which will see pay and display introduced at Marson Road car park and both car parks off Great Western Road in Clevedon.

Pay and display will also replace the current timed bays in Hill Road in Clevedon.

Pay and display meters will also be introduced in parts of  Clevedon town centre as well as along The Beach and Elton Road and Old Church Road.

Charges will apply between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday or Monday to Sunday, depending on the area.

Charges will also be introduced in Roath Road car park in Portishead and in the High Street.

The authority has also said it is looking at plans to introduce parking charges at Portishead Lake Grounds in the future.

In Nailsea the Clevedon Road long stay car park will also see charges introduced.

North Somerset Council executive is due to consider the proposals at its meeting in January.

If agreed, an 18 month consultation on the plans will begin.

North Somerset Council executive member for parking, Councillor Mark Canniford, who is leading the review, said: “Residents across North Somerset have very strong opinions about parking. We want to make sure their voices are considered.

“This is why the issues are being discussed by a group of representatives from different political parties from towns and villages across the area.

"The plan we have come up with is the first step in achieving our aim to manage parking in the best and fairest way.

“Next we will be looking for views from residents and visitors to fine tune these proposals and get ideas for the next steps.

“We have come up with a solution that brings consistency to charges across our area and makes sure residents and visitors have access to parking spaces in our towns.”

Although motorists in the northern part of North Somerset face having to cough up, the news is better for people in Weston-super-Mare.

Tariffs in some car parks and roads in Weston will become cheaper as part of the review.

Parking will be free on Weston seafront from 6pm as part of the changes. A three hour rate, to replace the current two hour one, will also be introduced in the town centre.

Parking charges at short stay car parks in Weston will also reduce by 30 pence an hour to £1.

There will also be reductions in charges at other town centre car parks.

Mr Canniford added: “The changes aim to make sure parking is managed in the best and fairest way possible, to encourage turnover of visitors to town centres, to make sure any fees are reasonable, and to cover the costs of enforcement in paid for and free spots.

"In response to the climate emergency declared by the council this year, the review is also looking to encourage visitors to choose different ways to travel.

“We have to make sure the changes we make will not cost the council money, so we are not able to do everything we would like straightaway.”

The proposals also include reviewing the administration fee for telephone and online payments and the number and location of machines to help with the £860,000 implementation costs.

The executive is due to meet on January 7 to consider the proposals.

If agreed further consultation will be carried out in each area.

Although it is expected to take 18 months for the consultation to be completed, the changes in Weston will be discussed first and any changes could come into place as early as April 2020.
