Plans to extend Coety Primary School move a step closer this month

Plans for an extension to Coety Primary School in Bridgend have moved a step closer. The plans, that would see the number of places at the school increased from 420 to 525 for pupils aged 4 to 11 years, with an 88 full-time equivalent nursery, were put out to the public in December of 2022 to gain feedback.

They would see the construction of a two storey building consisting of four additional classrooms on the current site based in Coity, with the proposal, if approved coming into effect from the beginning of the spring term 2025.

The report read: "In order to address the demand for places at Coety Primary School, officers undertook an options appraisal which identified the need to increase provision at the school. The appraisal resulted in a preferred option being identified in the form of a two-storey, four-classroom extension. On June 15, 2022, council approval was received to include the scheme in the capital programme and to utilise Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) capital resources to fund the extension."

The report also added the need for the additional spaces came in response to a higher numbers of students than previously anticipated, linked with the construction of new housing estates nearby in Parc Derwen and the Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon sites at Brackla northeast.

With the latest part of the process now moved by members, if there are no public objections to the proposals the cabinet could make their final decision on whether or not to proceed with the extension to Coety Primary school as soon as July.
