Plans to expand Bingham school by 150 places given the green light

A secondary school in Nottinghamshire is set to expand and increase capacity by 150 places.

Nottinghamshire County Council has approved in principle the expansion of Toot Hill School in Bingham.

The Council’s Policy Committee gave the proposal the green light on September 16, while also agreeing to fund feasibility studies and site surveys for an enlargement.

The academy in The Banks rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted is the founder school of the Nova Education Trust.

The school currently has more than 2,000 pupils age 11 to 18 and demand is high.

The County Council’s decision follows on from the approval for the expansion of South Nottinghamshire Academy which was given the go ahead back in July 2020.

The proposed expansions would help to meet increasing demand for secondary school places in the Rushcliffe area over the next ten years.

Conservative councillor Francis Purdue-Horan who represents Bingham East said: "There is increasing demand in the Bingham area with more housing developments on the way.

"Rushcliffe Borough Council has plans to build a new leisure centre and I think the school is outgrowing its current footprint.

"Toot Hill is an excellent school and I am delighted that pieces of the jigsaw are coming together for the future. I am happy to support it."

Councillor Kay Cutts MBE, Leader of the County Council said: “We are committed to investing in the future education of children and young people across Nottinghamshire.

“This decision to approve the proposal to expand Toot Hill School in the Rushcliffe will help ensure that parents in the area can send their children to their school of choice.

“It will also help to ensure that we meet our statutory duty of providing sufficient school places across the county, both now and in the future.

“It’s part of a multimillion-pound investment in new and existing schools, to ensure that we continue to meet demand for places as our communities grow, and that our buildings and facilities are up to a good standard.”
