Plans to demolish Gateshead Social club to way for flats for older people set to be approved next week

Revised plans to flatten a derelict social club to make way for flats are set to be given the go-ahead next week.

Gateshead Council's planning committee voted to approve John Moody's plans to demolish the Whickham and District Social Club and build a ‘L’ shape apartment block in its place in September.

At the time, council planners recommended approval saying that the building has been empty for three years and has become rundown.

Now, the applicant has come forward with fresh plans for 14 wheel-chair accessible apartments on the School Street site.

A planning document lodged with the council said the proposed apartments are aimed at older people.

"Each apartment has been designed to accommodate a wheelchair users in terms of access to the apartment and the facilities within the apartment," it said.

"This will create accommodation which meets the needs of the more mature residents of Whickham, providing much needed adaptable accommodation."

The statement claimed this would be good for the economy freeing up larger homes in the area for younger families.

It added: "This will allow residents to ‘downsize’ from larger family homes within the area, freeing these homes up for younger families which will benefit the economy of the surrounding area long-term."

Gateshead Council's planning department has recommended approval for the plans saying the homes are needed in the area.

"It is considered that the creation of a large number of wheelchair accessible homes is considered to be of significant benefit," a report to council said.

Gateshead Council's planning committee will vote on the plans on Wednesday.
