Plans to demolish former Newport pub and build apartments have been submitted

Plans to demolish a former pub in Newport to make way for apartments have been submitted.

Proposals for a residential development of 18 affordable apartments on the site of the former Victoria Inn on Nash Road in Lliswerry have been lodged with Newport City Council this week.

Put forward by agents Kennedy James Griffiths on behalf of Castell Construction, the plans include 13 one-bedroom apartments and five two-bedroom apartments along with 21 parking spaces, four electric vehicle charging points and bin storage.

According to documents in the proposals, an in-principle agreement has been reached with Newport City Homes to buy the scheme when it is complete and it will be "100% affordable".

The Victoria Inn was once a popular haunt in the area but closed in early 2020 after it decided not to reopen following the first coronavirus lockdown.

It is one of a number of pubs to close in the area in recent years. The Ferns on Lliswerry Road closed last year after more than 20 years, with the management saying it was "no longer financially viable due to the high business overheads and zero income for several months resulting in huge losses."

The Victoria Inn opened in its most recent form back in 2012 and was most recently run by legendary Newport publican John Pisani, who died back in April.

The plans will now be considered by council planners with a decision to be made in due course.
