Plans to demolish 120 Leeds council homes set for approval

Plans to demolish two run down high rise blocks containing 120 homes in Killingbeck are expected to be approved this month.

Leeds City Council say the two Highways blocks, that were built just off York Road in the 1960s, have 'exceeded their original design life' and should be replaced with 'modern, energy efficient' homes that can last over 60 years.

A council report also states it was 'not possible to identify a workable refurbishment solution' as it would cause too much disruption to tenants.

It stopped accepting new tenants for the properties in April and says each household which will be forced to move can expect to receive home loss and disturbance payments of around £6,930.

The council says it has been providing tenants with information and support to help them find a new home.

The project is expected to require an initial investment of £20.2 million. Over £15 million would be needed to build 120 new homes and £2.25 million would be needed to cover demolition costs.

A council report states: "We want everyone to be able to live in good quality homes and are committed to improving quality and standards.

"The preferred option is to clear the site for future re-development with new council housing."

The plans are expected to be approved by council executives at a meeting on Wednesday, July 24.
