Plans to convert office building on main road into apartments approved

A 10-storey city centre office building is set for a new lease of life after permission was given for it to be turned into flats.

Developers had their plans to convert the Castle Heights office block on Maid Marian Way into apartments approved on September 30.

The project will create 46 residential apartments - but it's unclear who the flats are intended to be for.

The office building is accessed from Maid Marian Way.

A planning statement, submitted on behalf of applicant BSP Holdings, states: "The proposed development comprises the conversion of the existing office building into residential apartments on the ground, first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth floors."

Hilary Silvester, executive chairman of the Nottingham Civic Society, had questioned the value of the development when the planning application was submitted to Nottingham City Council in August.

"I feel it's a shame to deplete the city of office space if the city is aiming to increase business potential in forthcoming years," said Ms Silvester.

"To deplete the city centre office space might not be ideal.

"They are saying they want to develop Nottingham, obviously it's a good idea, as a commercial and business centre more.

"In my opinion, it would be a shame to lose viable office space in the centre of the city, particularly with plans for economic development taking shape."

The applicant BPS Holdings has previously achieved planning permission to build a five-storey block of student flats on the car park of an old city centre textile factory.

Meanwhile on Maid Marian Way, separate developers hope to transform the Travelodge hotel in Maid Marian Way into student accommodation.
