Plans to convert 112 year old theatre turned bingo hall into takeaway venue

An 112-year-old theatre turned bingo hall may soon become a takeaway venue under plans submitted to Liverpool council.

The Pivvy, also known as the Pavilion Theatre, has stood as an entertainment venue on Lodge Lane in Toxteth since 1908.

In 1961, the venue was converted into a bingo hall, which it remained as until the coronavirus crisis struck in March this year, forcing many entertainment venues to close their doors.

The ECHO reported in March that staff at the bingo hall, run by Southport-based Cavenbridge Ltd, had been laid off 'temporarily' amid the ongoing crisis.

As the pandemic rages on with little end in sight, the Pivvy's doors have remained closed.

Last week, a planning application was submitted by Pavilion Group North West Ltd, a company run by the owners of nearby restaurant Kebbabish Original for a change of use for the Pivvy to provide takeaway food.

In recent years, Lodge Lane has developed a reputation as a food destination offering a wide variety of international cuisine with restaurants and takeaways springing up along the busy high street.

The plans would see part of the building converted to 5 separate kitchens running takeaway food services between 11am and 11pm, with additional facilities for storage and changing rooms.

In the application, which was registered on September 24, agents for the developer Broadgrove Planning and Development Limited said the plans included change of use for the area that was previously operating as the bingo caller's stage.

Some of the seating area either side of the stage, a storeroom and toilets are also included in the application, which will require a change in levels internally.

The application also includes "creation of openings to the front elevation, erection of timber canopy, creation of a platform to create level pedestrian access and creation of vehicular access into the site from Lorton Street."

Plans for five separate openings for the five different takeaways are included in the designs.

The application is currently open for comments until October 26.
