Plans to build temporary primary school in East Leake to meet demand while permanent school is built

A temporary school in Nottinghamshire could be given the green-light by councillors in response to the huge demand for pupil places in the next academic year.

Plans have been submitted for a new primary school to be erected in East Lake.

This is in response to an "educational requirement for a new primary school" in the area that will be satisfied once the project for the 420-pupils school comes to completion.

It is anticipated that the new permanent school, which will be built near Rempstone Road, will be ready by September 2023.

However, the educational need for pupil places is required from September 2022, by which time the permanent school will be under construction but will not be complete.

The school place demand is to be met with a temporary Learning Village to provide education for up to 120 pupils anticipated to be open next academic year.

The application for the 120-place temporary school on Sheepwash Way is to serve the new housing developments to the edge of East Leake adjacent the site and the village itself.

Vehicular and pedestrian access will be provided off Sheepwash Way to allow the construction of the permanent school.

A turfed area is to be provided close to the classrooms to provide a easily accessible soft play area.

Two canopies are proposed adjacent to the reception classrooms, and these are intended to be taken down and re-used on the permanent school site.

A secure fence will surround the learning village with vehicular and pedestrian access close to the administration building.

Within the village low level wooden fencing is provided for safeguarding children, providing separation from the car park area.

The school building design is formed of an administration block, a hall and dining space with associated kitchen and store, three classrooms with associated WC facilities and a reception classroom.

Adjacent the nursery two sun canopies are proposed which will be relocated into the completed school.

The temporary buildings are single storey in height and form a concise grouping on the site to reduce the impact of the development and to create a courtyard feel to the school.

The development is looking to include four classrooms inside the building.
