Plans to build supported housing on former Tynemouth hospital site set to be rubber stamped next week

Plans to build supported housing for the elderly on a former hospital site are set to be greenlit next week.

Sea-Island Developments is behind proposals to build 51 one-bedroom apartments on the former site of Tynemouth Victoria Jubilee Infirmary, on Hawkeys Lane.

The infirmary, which first opened its doors in 1950, was bulldozed in 2000.

The site is between Hawkeys Lane to the North and the new Aldi store to the south.

A design and access statement lodged with North Tyneside Council said the development would be aimed at older people who want an alternative to residential care.

It said: “The Proposed Development is likely to accommodate residents with an average age of 80+.

“In order that the development can provide a direct alternative to residential care it will provide: personal care and support services; on-site catering; first-responder medical assistance in emergencies; 24-hour support staff.

“Individual needs will be regularly reviewed to ensure that the right level of support is provided at all times – support will adapt as needs change.”

The authority’s planning department recommended approval for the plans saying that it would help with the area’s planning needs.

A report to council said: “It is officer advice that the development would provide a well-designed residential living environment for future occupiers and would not have an adverse impact upon the character and appearance of the surrounding area, or on neighbouring properties. The impact on the highway network is also considered to be acceptable.”

The authority’s planning committee will vote on the proposals next Tuesday.
